Welcome to Yough Senior High School

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:

Greetings from Yough Senior High School, home of the Cougars!  On behalf of our teachers and staff, we would like to welcome you!  Our mission is to provide all students with a 21st-century learning experience in a collaborative and supportive environment.  With your help, we can achieve this mission.

Our rigorous curriculum is the foundation that will prepare all of our students for future endeavors.  To do this we offer a variety of academic programs:

Dual credit classes, through Yough Senior High and The University of Pittsburgh, Westmoreland County Community College, and Mt. Aloysius College, let students get a jump start on college for a fraction of the tuition price. These classes, taught by our instructors during the standard school day, qualify for both high school and college credit simultaneously.  The Dual Enrollment Program is open to juniors and seniors, with courses covering a variety of subject areas.

In addition to our Dual Enrollment Program, we offer a number of Advanced Placement classes.  Our college and career-ready initiative doesn’t end with college preparedness.  For example, through our partnership with the Central Westmoreland Career & Technology center, students may enroll into industry based technical and certification programs designed to meet the needs of an evolving workforce and develop skills for lifelong learning and living.

Besides academics, we offer extracurricular programs including the performing arts and interscholastic athletics, competing in the WPIAL.  We also have several clubs, including NHS, Student Council, Yearbook, Art NHS, Chorus, Marching Band, Colorguard, FBLA, CAP/SADD, Spanish and French clubs, Robotics, Prom Committee, YALE, Pride, Student Mentor, Journalism, Strategies, Spirit, Outdoors and Envirothon.  These clubs help meet the interests of all our students and provide opportunities for them to get involved with their school!

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to view their student’s progress and attendance through the Powerschool Parent Portal, linked to our web site.  Attendance is important to the success of our students.  Being connected and involved makes it more likely that they will care about their education now and in the future.

Thank you for taking the time for visiting our web site.  I look forward to working with you this school year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Sutherland

Principal

Preschool Learning Lab Information

ATTENTION YOUGH COMMUNITY

The Yough Senior High School Family and Consumer Sciences Department in conjunction with the Child Development class, will be conducting our annual preschool learning lab for ages 3 to 4-1/2 year olds. The preschool learning lab will start in late February and run through mid-May 2018.

Space is limited and children must be potty trained, have their own transportation to and from the high school and attend regularly. The preschool learning lab is conducted on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The session will start at approximately 9:20 to 10:35am.

There is a procedure for admittance into the learning lab as such: 1.) The child must meet the above criteria. 2.) A pre-registration form must be completed and returned to the Yough High School to Mrs. Jenkins before January 31st, 2018. A pre-registration form can be requested and obtained thru the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at the Yough Sr. High School at jenkinsh@youghsd.net  3.) After the pre-registration form is turned in the department will conduct a screening to see which children would be a good fit to the program.

Junior and Senior high school students will be in charge of the lessons and activities for the preschool children, which are overseen by Mrs. Jenkins. Please note since the high school students are not professionals and it is a learning lab not every child would benefit from the program. The preschool learning lab is exempt by the Department of Welfare. Once accepted into the program you will be contacted by email, in late January/ early February. A small donation is asked by each family for the semester once the child is enrolled. This is applied towards some supplies for the learning lab. For more information please contact Mrs. Jenkins at the Yough Sr. High school. (Contact by email is preferred and is quicker.) jenkinsh@youghsd.net or 724-446-5520 extentions. 72102 0r 72104.
